Castles, Towers and Ruins

Lancashire is home to a number of castles, towers and ruins spread out across the county. The famous Lancaster Castle, Lancaster was home to the Lancashire Witch Trials of 1612 and was the longest serving operational prison in Europe until its closure in 2011.

Clitheroe Castle in the Ribble Valley has overlooked Clitheroe for over 800 years and with the Castle museum down below, this is an interesting day out for the whole family. The Roman Bath House in Ribchester served the needs of soldiers and the local population from around 100 AD and was in use for about 200 years. The octagonal Jubilee Tower on Beacon Hill, overlooking the town of Darwen, was completed in 1898 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. It is only accessable by a series of footpaths from Darwen leading on to the West Pennine Moors
