Earlier this week, Blackpool became famous for another kind of tower. A team from the Jali Restaurant at the Best Western Carlton Hotel has smashed the world record for the tallest poppadom tower.
The Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Mrs Mary Smith and the Mayoress, Julia Massey, were present to watch the team, made up of Kasi Shanmugas, Khagaraj Kandel, Kuldeep Panchal, Sanjeev Nanda and Surendra Achariya, stack 282 poppadoms to claim the record for the tallest static poppadom tower. The Poppadom Express restaurant in Southampton previously held the record, stacking 230 poppadoms in 2007.
The team also broke the record for the tallest moveable poppadom tower, transporting a tower of 230 poppadoms four foot across the restaurant.
Shilpa Patel, Operations Manager at the Best Western Carlton Hotel explained: "This record attempt was part of our celebrations for National Curry Week which runs from the 23rd to the 29th November. Throughout the week, we will be asking all our diners to donate £1.00 to Oxfam.
"Our restaurant has recently been awarded the TasteLancashire mark of quality and we're thrilled to add a world record title to that."
The Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Mrs Mary Smith commented: "I'm delighted to come and support the Jali Restaurant's fundraising efforts for Oxfam and have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating their world record success."
The Jali Restaurant, which was awarded the Taste Lancashire mark of quality earlier this year, will be defending their title during National Curry Week 2009.
