BBC Radio 1 has confirmed that the station's flagship event, Radio 1's Big Weekend, will this year take place in Preston's Moor Park on Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20. Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley made the announcement as her show was broadcast live from the city's National Football Museum.
Hosted by Radio 1's roster of DJ's, the Big Weekend is a totally free event, Europe's biggest free ticketed festival and kicks off the UK festival season. With a 30,000 strong capacity across the two days the event is broadcast on Radio 1, has a major interactive presence online and will be available to watch on BBC THREE and via the red button on interactive television. This year a third stage will be introduced bringing even more UK and international artists across a huge array of musical genres, all live.
Radio 1 will be making sure the majority of free tickets go to residents of Preston and the surrounding areas. To ensure a fair distribution of tickets in this area, Radio 1 will ask listeners to register their details and then select by random based on postcode. Over the coming months listen to Radio 1 and log on to www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 for the full line up, details on how to register for free tickets and information on ticket distribution.
