This accessible and inclusive exhibition traces the story of a mature artist through artworks, photographs, prose, music and video, up to and including her most recent works.
It travels from a child's view of life (Playing in the Garden with Friends) and follows the new-found freedoms of a teenager in the sixties to a more recent commentary on the world we live in. Pictures and text are used as a record, a travel journal and later as a tool to convey the artist's thoughts on current issues, such as the environment, wealth, and consumerism. The video My Teenage Diary is a young woman's response to a pivotal period in her life.
In the mid-sixties the continuing rise of a youth culture meant that teenagers now had access to their own music, fashion and TV, and they stood up for their personal beliefs and individuality. This is reflected through Caroline's readings, accompanied by artworks, photographs and music from the time.
Caroline Johnson grew up in Lancashire and studied fine art in Preston, Falmouth and Central St. Martin's, London. Her work has appeared in several publications, she's worked as artist-in-residence at rock festivals and care homes and collaborates as a documentary artist. She lived in France for twenty years, working on public art commissions. Caroline has had solo and group exhibitions in France and the north of England and continues to run workshops each summer in south west France.
