Life Under Our Noses: A pop-up photography display at Clitheroe Castle

This display features many of the amazing 250 species of flies recorded in Clitheroe Castle Grounds by local photographer Stephen Robinson.

The images were taken in 2009 and 2010. Stephen says: "As a child I had learned to identify flowers, birds and butterflies and even knew a bit about bumblebees; knowing what things are has always made life a bit more interesting. But I realised while walking round the Castle grounds that there were hundreds of creatures I knew nothing about, partly because they were small and didn't seem very important.

One day I noticed a fly and started to wonder how many different sorts there were. I bought a second-hand macro lens (good for taking pictures of very small things) for my camera and began to practise getting close enough to get a good picture without frightening the fly away. To help identify the flies (not always possible from a photograph) I bought some books, but mostly I used the expert help I found on the internet. To my surprise, in the first two years I found about 300 different species, over 250 of which I photographed within the Castle grounds."

These amazing images are a lasting record. Free entry to the Steward's Gallery.
