Morecambe Bay - Seldom Seen App

Hear the voices of local people, see images from both past and present, and learn about an under-visited part of Morecambe Bay with an interactive app.

The Seldom Seen app is a walking audio tour which explores the hidden assets, stories, history and nature of the wider area of Morecambe Bay in five walks. The walks cover Ulverston Canal Foot, Backbarrow, Hincaster and Heversham, Fort Walney and Sunderland Point.

Head out on the three hour Backbarrow walk, a two part walk separated by the Leven River. Pass through the tranquil woodland of Brow Edge leading down to the gunpowder works. Heading north, see and learn how the river drove industry in the village of Backbarrow.

If you want a walk with views, then Ulverston Canal Foot, taking 2.5hrs,overlooks a view to the bay. Hear about the Eider Ducks and their local population on Chapel Island, walk the length of Britain’s shortest, deepest Canal, learn about the iron works and how the rail network changed the area. Dive into nature and follow the coast to the quaint Plumpton Hall saturated in character.

Take in Walney Island’s unique mixture of military history and nature on ‘Fort Walney’, a 2.5hr coastal walk. Stand in World War One practice trenches, explore old gun ranges and look out for the island’s rare inhabitant, the Natterjack toad.

Enjoy a spectacular view of the entire Morecambe Bay area on the Hincaster and Heversham two part walk taking 3.5hrs. Start in historic Heverhsam before climbing up to see the view. The second part of the walk then takes in Hincaster’s canal and railway heritage.

For an easier walk, Sunderland Point is a coastal walk that takes in the unique intertidal heritage. Learn about fishing, the local ecosystem and the close knit community, as you’re guided by the voices of local people.

You can be sure not to miss out on any information about the history and heritage of Morecambe Bay, as well as points of interest with the interactive Seldom Seen App.

Alongside the app, five maps have also been developed spanning from the islands of Barrow to Cockerham; plotting the hidden assets of the spectacular Morecambe Bay area of Cumbria and Lancashire. The Seldom Seen Series of Maps reveals that places are never just one thing, but layers coexisting and connecting through time.

The Seldom Seen Series of Maps are available individually, or as a boxed edition of all 5 from Lancaster and Morecambe Visitor Information Centres.
