Free guided tours of this iconic building only recently fully opened to the public.
Lancaster Castle is one of the most iconic buildings in the north-west. Originally constructed in about 1093 by Roger de Poitou, it is today owned by HM The Queen in Right of Her Duchy of Lancaster. Serving as both a court & prison, it has witnessed some of the most famous and infamous trials in English history, including those of the Lancashire witches. Lancaster Castle is a Grade I Listed Building,
Guided tours will run every half hour from 10am and visit the main courtyard, Chapel Yard, The Shire Hall, The Crown Court, The Drop Room, Hadrian's Tower, The Old Cells.
Tours are available on a strictly first come first served basis. Visitors will be given tickets to the next available tour at the time of their arrival - no pre-booking is available for any free tour. Max 45 people per tour/session. Entry for the tours is through the rear door of the castle (opposite the Priory Church). Estimated maximum duration is 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes dependent upon the size of the group.
We regret that the guided tour is not wheelchair friendly. Wheelchair access is possible into the castle shop. Wheelchair users are advised to contact us prior to visiting.
