For most people of a certain age, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is car that you will recognise, even if it’s just from the song that was made famous in the Dick Van Dyke film from 1968. The whole story unlocks memories of days gone by for people from a number of generations and is a great one to share with young people of today. This Christmas, the whole family can enjoy the story of that old car live at Blackpool Winter Gardens, and we did just that on its opening night; Tuesday 10th December.
Full of fantastic props, including a frame of inventions that stayed in place at the front of the stage the entire time, a battered old car that transforms into the perfect Windmill for the home of Jeremy and Jemima and not to mention the family pet Edison, and of course Chitty Chitty Bang Bang himself, the show offered amazement and wonder from start to finish.
Audience participation is not a requirement for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but we heard so many people singing along and from the minute the music started at the beginning of the show, people were clapping along to the familiar tune of the Chitty song.
The story, as many people know, tells of inventor Caractacus Poots, played by Adam Garcia; star of Wicked, Coyote Ugly and more, as he tries to grant his children’s wishes of obtaining a car that is wanted by the Baron and Baroness of Vulgaria. Grandpa Potts, played by Emmerdale star Liam Fox, finds himselve whisked away to Vulgaria and the lives of all involved are changed drastically in the time between the opening scenes and the end of the play, taking the audience along for the ride. Gasps of wonder can be heard throughout the auditorium as Chitty comes to life, and the Potts family try to save themselves and Chitty from the Vulgarians, and; even worse, the Childcatcher – played by Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK Winner The Vivienne.
Full of laugh out loud moments, but also many sweet moments of family love, and naturally a love story, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will have you laughing, singing and clapping along from start to finish, and is an ideal Christmas evening out in Blackpool.
The show runs on various dates and times from now until Sunday 29th December, be sure to book your tickets now.
